exploding_kittens_2993446-iphone6_01The crowd-source feline-filled card game Exploding Kittens, which blew up Kickstarter one year ago today, by raking in over $8.7 million in funding (and gaining the prestigious title of Most Funded Game in Kickstarter History) is set to make another big bang when it hits iPhones tomorrow in a brand new digital port.

According to GameSpot, The Oatmeal’s Matthew Inman has re-teamed up with Seattle-based development studio Substantial to create an iOS release of this VERY popular card game.

For the uninitiated, Exploding Kittens is a Russian Roulette style card game which sees 2-6 players taking turns drawing cards from a common pile. If you draw a kitten card, you explode and you are out of the game. However, to stop your impending doom, you can play a defuse card to distract the kitten which can be anything from a laser pointer to a catnip sandwich. There are additional attack, skip, shuffle and ‘see the future’ cards or special cat cards which can also help you escape ejection and affect the other players.

This is not just a direct port of the physical release…

“The goal for the iOS app is to ‘not just replicate the original game, but evolve and improve it for old and new fans alike.'”

It’s unclear exactly what play options you’ll have in the app. For instance, will it offer both solo and multiplayer options?

Though from he screenshots that have been posted, it appears you will have the ability to both host and join games so there is definitely a local multiplayer mode for up to 6 players “in the same room”, but I’m not sure if there will also be online play option or not.

The app will cost $1.99 and there appears to be an additional, optional $1.99 IAP to unlock a party expansion pack of 4 additional cards.

UPDATE:
Exploding Kittens® – The Official Game is NOW AVAILABLE for download on the App Store, and as a special launch promotion, all IAP is free for a limited time. We’ve also confirmed that multiplayer support is indeed local only, meaning you won’t be able to play against your friends unless you are all in the same room.
