Star Wars Day (May the 4th) is still be a couple of days away, but big Star Wars Sale-abrations are already happening on the App Store.
Yesterday I told you about Zen Studio’s four brand new Star Wars-themed tables, but there are some other new Star Wars themed apps and in-app sales that you should definitely check out as well.
Before I get to the sales, lets talk about the new app(s) and look at those brilliant new Star Wars pinball tables in a little more detail:
If you haven’t played any of the Star Wars tables before, they are rather ornate, often featuring all sorts of missions and secondary mini tables unlocked by hitting certain bumpers and targets.
First up is Han Solo…
Teamed up with his furry sidekick Chewbacca, this table features some iconic elements from the original trilogy including a shooting range style Creature Cantina (including Greedo) and a giant Millenium Falcon complete with quad-laser cannon and a secret cargo area.
Set inside the Sandscrawler, Star Wars™ Pinball: Droids™ puts C-3PO and R2-D2 on quest for freedom. By hitting three designated targets at the center of the table, players trigger the mission selector which allows access to this table’s five special missions: Fix C-3PO, Navigational Disruption, Evade Nebit, Escape Routes and Immobilize the Sandscrawler. There is a lot going on in this table and the action is fast, there are also a number of perks that can be unlocked to really boost your score. One of the coolest elements is the magnet crane, which once charged, can be used to save a ball that rolls out of the table. I think this might be my favorite of the new tables.
The original film that started it all get some love in the Star Wars™ Pinball: Episode IV A New Hope table. Relive famous sequences from the film, attempt to get rid of the Stormtroopers with Leia and enter a mini table to help C-3PO and R2-D2 escape from the Tantive IV. Convince a Stormtrooper that “these are not the droids they are looking for”. Or steal a Stormtrooper’s armor and go undercover to find and rescue princess Leia (with a foray into a trash compactor mini table). All the action culminates in the ultimate showdown between Obi-Wan and Darth Vader and the classic TIE fighter battle / trench run. Fans of the original film will adore this one.
Finally, the last table is dedicated to the Masters of the Force. This is an interesting one with a main theme of the balance of the Force. One half of the table represents the light side w/ Yoda and Dagobah and the other side is the Dark Side with the Emperor. Your goal is to try to complete all of the fights on both sides and bring balance to the Force. To me, this felt the fastest of all the tables and you constantly have to be on your toes as the ball comes back often and quickly.
You really can’t go wrong buying any (or all) of these tables, but if I had to pick a favorite it’s be Droids and least favorite I’d say that the Masters of the Force only because of the speed…I found it to be the toughest.
The other big new Star Wars app this week was a surprise release, and that is
Star Wars Journeys: The Phantom Menace.
The app is an episodic interactive storybook which allows readers to “experience the Star Wars story in an epic new way”. This first episode covers the (sequentially) first episode of the series, The Phantom Menace. Discover and unlock hidden content using the 180-degree parallax technology as well as customize and race your own podracer. You can even compete in tournaments and daily racing events to win special rewards.
While Phantom Menace was my least favorite of the films, this is just the first of a planned “episodic series of apps set in the world of the legendary saga”, with an Attack of The Clones app following soon-after. While The Phantom Menace doesn’t interest me all that much, I’m excited to see what Disney does with this app going forward and curious to see their coverage of the classic trilogy.
