Now here’s some exciting news for fans of indie game designer Zach Gage (SpellTower, Really Bad Chess, Sage Solitaire).
Today Gage announced that he has signed into a multi-game partnership with Merriam-Webster, involving both his bestselling game SpellTower, and an unannounced word game set for release later this year.
For the uninitiated, the aesthetically crisp SpellTower continues to be one of the best word games available on iOS. Players attempt to form words by dragging connections between lettered tiles. Longer words earn you more points, while the smaller ones help you to clear the board.. There are multiple game modes like the casual and strategic Tower Mode, as well as challenging puzzle modes and the pulse racing Rush Mode. It is quite a stellar game and has been on at least one of my devices ever since 2011 when it first launched (has it really been that long?!).
Gage will not only be utilizing Merriam-Webster’s famous word list within both of these titles, but he’ll also be developing exclusive web games, and promotions in conjunction with Merriam-Webster.
The first of these web-based games is SpellTower Minutes, “an exclusive bite-sized version of SpellTower made just for the web”. It challenges players to score as many points as they can in the casual, un-timed, 140 tile “get the best score you can” Tower Mode or special one and five minute timed variants.
Coming this Thursday, February 9th, there will be a huge update for SpellTower iOS app. A long time coming, and with much of the code completely rewritten from the ground up, the update adds the new dictionary licensed from Merriam-Webster as well as a new Zen mode (with no length requirements), online and local multiplayer, 12″ iPad Pro support with an exclusive Super Tower mode, an updated visual design and more.
