It’s another big Wednesday night for iOS gamers, and everyone seems to be getting a bit defensive, with no less than four new games in the tower defense genre arriving today/tonight.
We’ll kick things off with a freebie whose release was delayed a week until tonight, Bellboy. It is an action puzzle game in which you take the role of Jack, a hardworking bellboy in desperate need of a vacation. He must navigate the constantly moving floors of his Art Deco hotel, being careful not to run out of floor, knock things over or attract the attention of some rabid dogs while he takes care of patrons, diligently delivering their luggage to their rooms. This looks like a nice fun (and frenetic) freebie.
Scurvy Scallywags is an indie match-3 /RPG mash-up from Monkey Island creator Ron Gilbert and his DeathSpank collaborator, Clayton Kauzlaric. Players move their pirate around the game board by matching 3 or more tiles, with the game board shifting with each match, allowing for a good deal of strategy. This pirate themed title looks like a Win-arrr. Scurvy Scallywags will be available at a special launch sale price of 99¢ (50% off).
For just a buck you can pick up Chillingo’s latest publishing effort, Bridgy Jones™. It is a clever looking puzzle game that makes you both a structural and locomotive engineer constructing bridges out of wooden beams, tracks, ropes and concrete blocks. While we’ve seen a number of bridge building games on the App Store in the past, this once looks like it has some nice character to it.
Like they did with Star Wars Pinball, Zen Studios is back with a new Marvel-themed stand-alone pinball app, called Marvel Pinball. It comes with the Avengers table and other Marvel Pinball tables can be purchased as in-app purchases. However it seems like these themed releases only cause buyer confusion. If you’ve already purchased the Marvel tables within Zen’s Zen Pinball app, it doesn’t make sense to purchase this app as the IAP tables are not transferable.
Next up are number of sequels, all of which look like they’ve done a fine job of improving upon the originals.
iOS gaming has come quite a ways since the launch of the original iOS release of Sparkle in 2010, and with Sparkle 2, 10tons Ltd is offers iOS gamers even more (shinier) orbs to sling, with three modes of play, special effects over 200 combinations of enhancements to your Slinger and over 90 unique levels of game play. The game is on sale for $2.99 for a limited time at launch.
3 Sprockets is back with Cubemen2, the sequel to its popular 3D RTS Strategy game. A mix of RTS and Tower Defense this sequel has been completely redesigned from the ground up, with new game modes and both single and multiplayer game play. There is even a level editor available when playing on the iPad.
The last of the sequels is the hugely anticipated Kingdom Rush Frontiers (iPhone, iPad). This is the sequel to one of the finest tower defense games available on the iOS platform, Kingdom Rush. Keeping the same basic tower building and upgrading game play of the original, developer Ironhide Game Studio has somehow managed to make the game look even better than the original. Featuring new towers, levels and heroes, multiple difficultly options, three game modes per level and just a ton of content, Tower Defense gaming on iOS has never looked better. If you pick up only one new game tonight…this should be it!
OneEyeAnt takes a comedic approach to defense gaming with Kill the Clowns, a game which they claim is “violent enough for adults, cute enough for kids”. In this self-appointed “the most ridiculous defense game ever”, player must defend humanity from an invading army of alien-clowns hailing from the Planet Ridiculonia. Hell bent on retrieving human babies whose drool which apparently “provides an unmatched flavor and texture to their space-candies”, it is up to the ring master, elephants and other circus performers to defend our planet’s youngest of citizens.
Finally we have another point and click adventure game from the talented partnership of Péndulo Studios and Bulkypix. Originally released on the PC in 2001, Runaway: A Road Adventure is the precursor to the duo’s Runaway: A Twist of Fate game series (part 1, part 2).
Redesigned for touch devices, the story follows the adventures of a student whose life turned upside-down when he gets caught up with a mysterious woman who’s carrying a stolen crucifix and is being hunted by mafia. If you are into classic point and click adventures, this is one you’ll probably want to check out.
