It’s the end of an era; Time to say goodbye to a pioneering digital board game app.

TheCodingMonkeys delivered some surprising and unfortunate news over the weekend regarding their award-winning Mac and iOS digital adaptations of Carcassonne. They have sadly announced that due to the end of a licensing deal with Hans im Glück, that they will be ceasing sales of their fantastic digital adaptations of this classic tile-laying game.

With a heavy heart we have to announce that our rendition of Carcassonne will no longer be available for purchase as of March 1st 2020. Our contract with the Company behind Carcassonne, Hans im Glück, has come to an end. Shortly after that, the interpretation by Asmodee will be available for purchase for Mac and iPhone/iPad, so your Carcassonne needs will be catered for in the future.

In many ways, this early iOS digital board game title really set the gold standard for titles to come and it’s a shame to see this app disappear into the ether over the termination of a licensing agreement.

It is worth clarifying that while starting on March 1, 2020, TheCodingMonkeys’ versions of Carcassonne will no longer be available for purchase, the studio is guaranteeing to run their servers for at least a year from now, and after that for as long as is technically feasible.

While this is certainly devastating news for TheCodingMonkeys, Asmodee Digital has a huge catalog of digital board games and their implementation of Carcassonne (which is currently available on Android, Steam and the Nintendo Switch) has been quite well received on these other platforms.

There is no word as to whether Asmodee will offer any sort of launch discount for existing owners of the current Carcasonne iOS app or its various in-app purchases, though I fully suspect that existing owners will have to re-purchase the content again if they want to access it via Asmodee’s new, upcoming iOS app.

Don’t Be Sad…It’s A SALE-bration!

If you’d like to support TheCodingMonkeys (and pick up some great games), they are currently running a final 50% off sale on their version of Carcassonne “to give as many of you and your friends a chance to obtain this version while you still can”.

If you do not already own any/all of their other iOS titles as well, then I highly recommend you do so, especially while they are on sale for a limited time.

Lost Cities is a MUST HAVE for anyone’s digital board game collection, Rules! is a brilliant memory puzzle game, Chicken Cha Cha Cha has been a favorite to play with my kids for several years now and One Button Travel is a neat interactive fiction game.

Although this means the end of the road for our rendition of Carcassonne, we are excited about our future projects and hope that we can tell you more soon!

We wish TheCodingMonkeys the best of luck with their upcoming projects and we certainly look forward to whatever entertaining titles they should grace our iOS devices with in the future!
