Tonight iOS gamers will get some new endless runners, plenty of bullet-ridden and cross-platform action, a gorgeous platformer, retro goodies and an in-depth baseball management sim. A number of these titles have either already been available on other platforms or had soft launches in other countries, but tonight they will be making their worldwide iOS debut.
There are quite a number of titles to cover, so let’s just jump right in with the freebies…Craneballs Studios returns with Overkill 2, the much-anticipated free-to-play 3D gallery-style shooter sequel. It features some rather nice looking graphics and over 30 different upgradable weapons. There are lots of customization features and a web-based profile system (normally only found on PC/Console shooters) that allows you to share progress among multiple devices/platforms. You’ll be spending a a good deal of time with this shooter.
As far as endless runners go, we’ve got three new ones this week, starting with Run Sheldon!. Staring an adorable little tortoise who must escape the evil Hare Gang who are rather upset about losing the ‘famous’ race. You’ll have to run, fly, bounce and swim to help Sheldon get away and keep his trophy.
The other endless runner is Chillingo’s latest publishing effort, Dream Chaser, a 3D story-driven runner with tilt-based controls.
Dragon Blast! is a physics puzzle game that is part Angry Birds, part sliding puzzle in which you are a dragon, trying to defend your dragon family from viking warriors using your fiery breath to clear paths and defeat your enemies.
Namco takes the TEKKEN franchise in an entirely different direction with this free-to-play, turn-based collectible card battling game. Supporting cross-platform play, the company plans to launch “physical Tekken Card Tournament Game Cards in early Summer 2013″ which will “bring real-world crossover to the gameplay, with unique QR codes letting players instantly add the card to their digital deck in-game, and Augmented Reality to bring the characters to life in players’ environments”.
Now it’s time to get a little retro with The Other Brothers and Slayin. The former is a hand painted pixel art platformer that follows brothers Joe and Jim on their “wild and crazy adventure, as they traverse junkyards, cities, sewers and more to track down our, red haired, damsel in distress, Tavy”. it features unlockables, stars, boss-fights and multi-path levels which encourage replay-ability. The later (which has a funny launch trailer) is an endless action RPG, featuring pixel art, chiptunes soundtrack and a cool on-screen NES-styled controller. If you can’t wait until tonight, you can try out Slayin for Free on the PC/Mac or from within your browser here (thanks to JP for the link). Well that’s $2 already spent for me!
Hopefully you still have some money left, because next up is BADLAND, an absolutely gorgeous atmospheric side-scrolling platformer you won’t want to miss. You may recall seeing some screenshots I posted when the game was originally announced last July. Now the wait is finally over, and boy was it worth it. Using one-touch controls players control a bird-like creature as he tries to navigate through a maze-like, silhouetted forest, through a variety of tricky obstacles. A journey of discovery for player and character alike, this one is a feast for the senses.
Finally we have a game for all of you baseball fans, iOOTP Baseball 2013. Not really being a sports guy myself, I haven’t played with any of Out of the Park Developments’ previous iOOTP Baseball titles, but they seem to garner a lot of positive reviews, so I suspect this latest verison, iOOTP Baseball 2013 will be well-worth checking out.
Let us know which of these games you’ll be picking up tonight when these (and more) new releases go live at 11pm EST.
