If your current iPad is constantly running out of space and you have some extra cash to burn, then you can head on over to the Apple Store now and get a brand new 128GB iPad.
Usually Apple reserves the capacity upgrades for a new model launch, but like their 4th Gen iPad introduction after only 7 months (instead of the usual 12) Apple continues to dispense with tradition. Trying to stay ahead of the competition, it is now offering its largest capacity iOS device yet for $100 more than the existing 64GB model. For $799 you get the 128GB Wi-Fi-only model and it is $929 for the Wi-Fi + Cellular model, all other specs and features of the iPad remain the same as this is purely a storage upgrade.
Unless you are really desperate for space, I personally don’t see a reason for existing iPad 3 / 4 owners to upgrade now, you’d be better off waiting for the iPad 5th gen rumored to be coming sometime later this year. In the meantime, you can make use of service like Dropbox for some free additional space.
I had hoped to see the 128 GB capacity be introduced with the 3rd gen iPad, but unfortunately it didn’t happen, then the pseduo “new model” 4th gen kept capacities the same as well (until now).
With many people downloading movies and TV shows for offline viewing, photo and home movie libraries and with the ever-increasing size of Retina quality apps, at this point the 16 GB model is becoming pretty much pointless. I am often running out of space even on my 64GB iPad, but I cannot fathom paying $799 for my next iPad just to get more space. It is unclear what Apple will be doing going forward, now that they have introduced the higher price SKU, but one thing is for certain, the 16GB model needs to go the way of the dodo (or in more modern terms…the VCR).
Current shipping times for the 128GB iPad are 1 to 3 business days.
