Blacksmith Games’ Appvent Calendar, which really helped to drive the “premium 24-hour free app” phenomena is back for another holiday season.
In case you are unfamiliar with the site, “Appvent” is a play on words and a reference to “Advent”. In Christianity, Advent is “the season including the four Sundays preceding Christmas or (in Eastern Orthodox churches) the forty days preceding Christmas”. On a traditional Advent calendar there is a box for each of the days leading up to Christmas, and every day you open another box and you get a little treat (usually a piece of chocolate). Blacksmith Games’ Appvent Calendar works in much the same way, but the daily treats are iOS apps. These apps are free for 24 hours and then a new app is revealed.
In the past, the Appvent Calendar has been filled with “premium” apps, really great freebies, some of which were quite a shock to be made free for a day. Both a game and a non-game app are selected each day. Now that there is an abundance of sites offering daily limited time freebies, it’ll be interesting to see what shows up in the Appvent Calendar this year. However, they are certainly off to a GREAT start in the games category, offering Retro Dreamer’s excellent match-3 game Linkoidz. Also available for today is AppSequence’s SalaryBook, which obviously will have a bit less of a broad appeal, but hopefully selections will get better.
