Kentucky-based developer Potluck has just launched Overgram, a free version of their popular photo typography app Over.
The app allows you to add text on top of your photos to create anything from holiday cards, birth announcements, congratulatory messages, motivational posters or just funny captions. In the free Overgram app there are ten fonts to choose from and you can adjust the color, size and position to achieve the exact effect you are going for. When you are done with your creation, you can save it back to your device, email it to a friend, or upload it to your favorite social media site like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or Tumblr.
I gave the app a try myself and the interface is super simple to use. The menu consists of an intuitive and responsive spinning wheel and editing and positioning text just takes a few taps. However, one thing I should note is that you are forced to crop your image to a square shape, which I assume is done both for easy Instagram integration. The resulting effect is quite cool looking and very reminiscent of a record album or CD cover.
“With its smooth and intuitive interface, Overgram allows users of any skill level to easily customize their photos with the message of their choice,” said Aaron Marshall, designer of Overgram. “Whether using the original Over app, or the new free Overgram, we know that anyone that takes photos with their mobile device will love being able to send friends and family truly unique photos with a personal touch.”
As we enter into the big November/December holiday season, this app could be a great way to jazz up those cards or party invites.
Overgram offers users 10 fonts from the Over app as well as all of the resizing, alignment and positioning capabilities of the paid version. If you like Overgram, the full version (Over), is currently on sale for 99¢ (reg. $1.99) and provides “over 225 fonts, includes a variety of stock backgrounds and features additional customization options”. Potluck is running daily giveaways where they pick an Overgram Photo of the Day and award its creator with a code for the full version of Over. Just tag your Overgram photos with ‘#BestOvergram’.
There are a number of samples of photos that users have created using Overgram on the app’s Instagram page.
