spider-man-unlimited_674657235_ipad_02.jpgAfter all the excitement of Apple’s big announcements on Tuesday, it seems like a fairly light week for new iOS releases.

Gameloft kicks things off this week with Spider-Man Unlimited an animated episodic “narrative runner” in which the new Sinister Six, “who have opened a dimensional portal to summon different versions of themselves” and you must unite the Spider-Verse by recruiting an army of Spider-Men to stop them. Swing, run and fight through Manhattan, fighting super villains in boss battles, climbing walls and skydiving. Collect, fuse, and level up in-game Spider-Man cards to unlock additional benefits. There are currently two Issues: THE GREEN GOBLIN, and THE VULTURE with a third on the way.

SongPop creators FreshPlanet has returned to their roots with a new trivia game called TravelPop. Travel the world (13 countries including China, Brazil, Australia, and Canada) and test your knowledge of local food, locations, inventions and more. See if you or your friends are faster (or just luckier) at identifying each of the food and other items pictured in a series of photos originates from a designated country.

Retro Dreamer returns to the app store with Planet Hop, a hard and fast twitch game where you compete for the high score by tapping to hop between two very fast-moving planets as many times as possible without missing. The game is a result of a Ludum Dare game jam in August, in which the theme was “connected worlds”. If you like quick, simple twitch games then you’ll want to grab this freebie.

Goblin Sword is a great looking new entry in the popular retro platforming genre. Led by an evil wizard, an army of monsters have invaded your hometown and it is up to you to slay as many of them as you can, collect loot, avoid traps and defeat his middle management and finally face off with the evil wizard himself. The game offers 48 levels of play, all kinds of in-game weapons and collectibles, customizable touch controls and perhaps most-importantly, no IAP, plus it is on sale for 99¢ (50% off) for launch. I bet this one will be pretty sweet to play on that new 5.5″ iPhone 6 Plus screen.

mujo_882416288_ipad_01.jpgMUJO is unique zen-like take on the match-3 RPG battle genre from Oink Games. You have up to three Greek gods in your troop. You tap and hold groupings of like tiles on the gridded play area to combined them into more powerful single stacks. Individual stacks can then be combined with other tiles and stacks to become even more valuable. Sword tiles are used to attack, chests to unlock new gods and the rest to bolster your gods’ XP and level them up. The game has a zen-like feel to it and there is a nice mixture of challenge-based levels and ‘take all the time you need’ levels. I am quite enjoying this one and I love the art style.

Partyrs is a cute looking puzzle game from developer Shelly Alon in which you are trying to make party-goers happy by shifting them around such that you satisfy each guest’s particular likes and dislikes. The gameplay sounds a bit similar to Girls Like Robots, which I really enjoyed so I’ll probably be checking this one out as well.

Bulkypix is joining the reflex gaming club this week with the release of Hyper Trip, a fast-paced game of avoidance set in a futuristic neon-infused 3D geometric world. Simply tap left or right to move your square and avoid rapidly approaching walls while trying to earn your spot atop the Game Center leaderboards.

leaping-lemmings-for-ipad_910940136_ipad_02.jpgGMT Games’ digital release of their family friendly strategy game Leaping Lemmings actually launched last week, but somehow I managed completely miss it so I’m mentioning it this week. In this tabletop game, each player “controls a cloned clan of lemmings that have been specially trained to compete with the other lemming clans, all trying to scurry down a canyon and hurl themselves over a cliff”. Points are awarded for lemmings that can thwart the eagles circling overhead and make the leap off the edge of the cliff, with extra points given based on style and distance. The player with the most victory points at the end of the game wins. The app version supports solo play against up to five AI opponents as well as a local pass and play mode. GMT is waiting to see if there is sufficient demand for online play before possibly adding it in a future update. If you want to see what the game is like, you can tune in tonight at 9pm EST to BoardGameGeek’s livestream.

FOTONICA is an interesting looking first-person 3D runner that (at least from the from the video footage I’ve seen) gives me a sort of Mirror’s Edge vibe, but set in a wire-frame universe. Players try to adapt to their ever-changing surroundings holding down a finger to run, releasing to jump and holding in mid-air to dive and land. If you want to survive…it’s all about timing.

phantom-rift_889944129_ipad_02.jpgPhantom Rift is a new adventure/RPG game from Foursaken Media which features a unique real-time battle system “inspired by Mega Man Battle Network”. I can’t tell you what exactly that means as I’ve never played Mega Man Battle Network, but there you go. Players explore a “a dark, ethereal world filled with mystery and powerful magic” collecting hundreds of spells, loot and more as they travel through various dungeons, head off on quests and do battle with dangerous creatures. If you are a fan of RPGs then you can check this one out for $2.99.

Oceanhouse Media is back with a new title in their Cat in The Hat interactive book series called Safari, So Good. The app takes your children on an African safari to learn all about African wildlife, including elephants, zebras, giraffes, hippos, and more. This iOS exclusive app features all of Oceanhouse’s standard features and wonderful classic Dr. Seuss rhyming and illustrations. It is on sale for launch at an introductory price of $3.99 (reg $5.99).

twelve-a-dozen_907047432_ipad_02Finally, from Bossa Studios, the folks who brought us the amazing Thomas Was Alone and the wacky and tough Surgeon Simulator comes Twelve a Dozen. It is a stunning looking atmospheric, mathematical, edutainment puzzle platformer (phew that was a lot of buzz words) which “‘takes you on a journey through a universe of numbers”. The game follows the adventures of heroine, Twelve, as she tries to rescue her family. Designed to support the curriculum of 10-14 year-olds, players use addition, subtraction, division, multiplication, and more complex operations to unlock special powers to help drive the narrative and solve a series of puzzles revolving around the manipulation of numbers.
