Today, Electronic Arts announced that it has reached an agreement to acquire Melbourne, Australia-based Mobile developer, Firemint for an undisclosed amount of money. Firemint is best know for creating the wildly popular Flight Control game as well as the Real Racing series for iOS which have sold over 4.5 million and close to 2 million respectively.

Today’s news follows closely behind EA’s recent acquisition of Mobile Post Production (MPP), a world leader in smartphone cross-platform development and porting of games for smartphones. With last year’s acquisition of Chillingo for $20 million and 2009’s acquisition of Playfish, Electronic Arts is making some great strategic moves to solidify their commitment to quality iOS gaming. I for one am really excited to see what new directions these most recent acquisitions will take EA Mobile and the expect to see continued quality games that come out of each of these studios that have been rolled into the EA family. What will be most interesting to watch is what happens to the Real Racing franchise as it is a direct competitor with EA’s own Need For Speed series.
