Here’s a breakdown of all the games (in no particular order):

Draw Slasher: Dark Ninja vs Pirate Monkey Zombies

You control a ninja monkey who fights off zombie pirate monkeys. How can you lose with that premise? Use left and right buttons to move back and forth to find the zombies as they come out of the woods (from a pirate ship). Slash the screen to make your ninja cut the zombies into bits. Simple and very effective!

The Zombie Whale Hole

I originally wrote this one off, but boy was I wrong. There’s a zombie whale in a hole in the ground. He’ll suck any animals down that he can, so you have to plug the hole while animals cross on the tree branch above. Originally I thought, it takes no skill to play this. That’s a trap. The game starts using all manor of tricks to get you to let go. Sadly, they actually caught me, most of the time. I don’t want to spoil what’s going on, so just try it. Sadly, the replay value isn’t the highest once you’ve figured out the tricks.

Zombie Saw

I don’t know what this has to do with zombies, or a game. There’s a buzz saw. Hold it vertically, nothing happens. Hold it horizontally, it turns on, drops to the side of the screen, then sprays blood. Woohoo. Yeah, that’s all it does.

Zombie Apocalypse Manual

Helpful tips for surviving the zombie apocalypse. There are hundreds in here, and they’re not too bad.

Apocalypse Zombie Fish

Using a power gauge, tap the screen to throw a pipe bomb at zombie fish. Tap again to blow them up. You’re scored on how high the fish flies and you get bonuses for blasting multiple fish in one shot. Pretty fun and addictive.

Zombie Karts

Do you like Mario Kart? If so, this is a very simple knock off using zombies. Amusing cart racing with tilt steering controls and weapons. While it has a few small faults (like being able to drive through trees), overall it’s pretty fun.

Zombie Invasion

A simplified survival shooter. You stand in the center of the bottom of the screen and shoot (by tapping) on zombies that are quickly advancing your way. How long can you survive before you get eaten? The longer you go, the better weapons you can get to make killing them easier.

Zombie Pizza

A classic time management iPhone title. The zombies are hungry! You have to make pizzas for them as the ingredients blaze past you on a conveyor belt. Chaotic and massively fun.

Zombie Nombie

This is just a little time waster app. You have a zombie’s head and you can poke and prod it to amuse yourself. The zombie is very responsive and entertaining, to be honest. You can also add accessories to him, and put a timer in his head. I found the timer feature quite helpful around the kitchen.

Def Con Z

This is a platformer very reminiscent of Adventure. You’re jumping and shooting your way around the zombies. It’s not too bad, but the controls could be a lot better.

In Conclusion

For the price, Appy’s All-In-1 ZombieBox is absolutely great and a must-own for zombie fans. There’s at least one or two games in here that will please everyone. Don’t go in expecting a masterpiece and you won’t be disappointed.

Undead’s controls consist of two buttons on the left, the top of which is your fire button, and the other is a virtual stick for moving. Both of these work well, but for some reason the location of the “shoot” button felt a bit awkward at first since it forced me to take my finger off the movement stick, and therefore not allowing me to move and fire at the same time. You can swipe your finger pretty much anywhere else on the screen to aim your gun. When your current clip of ammo runs out, a small reload button appears, or you can simply shake your device to reload. Moving close to an open window shutter triggers another button to appear which you can press/hold to close the shutters, which helps delay the attacking zombies’ entry into the house.

The game’s 3D graphics and animations are well rendered, though the overall lighting is perhaps a bit too dark. Apparently the game engine is capable of rendering “up to 32 shambling zombies at once”, but fortunately I was never in a situation requiring me to face down 32 simultaneous undead enemies to verify this. However I did have several instances with groups of 5 or more attackers, all of which ran smoothly on my second gen iPod Touch. The sound design and effects are also well done, giving Undead a nice spacial quality, creating an aural sense of where the zombies are coming from (even w/o headphones).

The movement and controls are smooth and responsive, but I would have liked to see an aim sensitivity adjustment option that allowed for faster turns without multiple swipes. You have an aiming reticle to assist you in targeting, and when you stay still, this shrinks, allowing you to be more precise and obtain more headshots, which in turn, earns you more money and helps you conserve your bullets (because the ammo is sparse). That being said, the shot detection system still needs a bit more fine tuning as there were multiple instances where I was shooting body shots that were registered as “headshots”.

I did find it a bit difficult to know which areas were unlock-able until I randomly roamed the walls and found a spot where the “money” icon popped up. It would be helpful to either have a popup overview blue-print style map that gives you the layout of the house, to see where you could possibly unlock next. When the game ends, players are asked to enter an old-school style high score moniker of just three characters. The literature we were initially sent with the game mentioned that it had OpenFeint integration allowing you to “keep track your survival skills and compare your scores with others engaged in the game”, but as far as I could tell, this never made it into the final build. I think a global leader board along with achievements would really round out the gameplay. Additional ammo pickups as well as quicker access to (and more variety of) new weapons would help flesh out the game as well.

In Conclusion

Undead: The Last Refuge is a solid zombie-themed endurance-style first person shooter, with nice graphics and sound, but needs just a little bit more punch to reach its full potential. After a slow build up, it takes off and with no power-meter, Undead is both challenging and unforgiving. The game is priced appropriately at $2.99, since in my opinion, Undead is superior to a similar title Be Free or die, but it’s missing the scale, features and bells and whistles of more expensive titles like Zombie Infection, Call of Duty : World At War : Zombies or Call of Duty : World At War : Zombies II. Undead : The Last Refuge is mindless entertainment that allows you to just switch off your brain, and then defend it.

The official game of the novel, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies is a side-scrolling beat-em-up which is a “melding of zombie slaying action and touching romance narrative”. There are twelve levels (chapters), and some fantastic looking graphics and sound. Players have the ability to upgrade their special attacks, while avoiding both the undead and deadly (unfortunately living) suitors.

Freeverse says that the game is perfect for players (and readers) of every age newest game and will appeal to rabid Jane Austenites and zombie fans alike. Plus+ integration is included as well.

Zogma features three distinct locations for you to defend, including a farm house (of course), a hospital and a surrounded diner car. While fending off zombies, you’ll earn money to purchase much needed weapons upgrades and defenses. The game features full Plus+ Integration for online leaderboards and achievements. Compete against your friends to see who can survive the most days from first infection!

Keep track of how well your country is holding up against the rest of the world via the Global Outbreak map. The passing of the days are reflected in a genuine night / day cycle and Jumbo Squid warns that if you think killing zombies by day seems difficult, then just wait till you try it by torch light!

From the screenshots and video we’ve seen, Zogma looks to have nice polished comic book style graphics, which are attributed to veteran cartoonist Rhys McDonald. Always willing to take down a few more zombies, this game has definitely peaked our interest and we plan on taking it for a spin once we get through some of our current backload of reviews.
