You know which ones I’m talking about, with names like ‘World’s Greatest Police Chases’. You can’t help but stop and watch, and before you know it you’ve been captivated by the mayhem and destruction for a half an hour or more. Well, iOS-newcomer Hutch Games’ debut title, Smash Cops takes this guilty pleasure a step further, placing your right into the action of a number of high-speed police chases.

When you first start up the game, your ears are treated to a fantastic musical score for the menu which sounds like it’s taken directly from an 80′s cop drama title sequence. It sets the tone perfectly for exactly what you are about to to experience. With its stunning graphics, sound effects and top-down tv news chopper-camera view, complete with banner overlay announcing your mission details, Smash Cops really does feel like you are in an actual TV police chase. The work that the Hutch team have put into the sweeping camera work and over-all presentation really shines through, resulting in a genuinely unique, fun and fast paced game with loads of polish.

There are two different control schemes for players to choose from. The default is a mode where you place one finger on the screen behind your vehicle and you drag it left and right to turn the car. Tapping the screen with another finger triggers your ram/boost. The other option is a virtual joypad for movement. I’ve tried both and they both are quite responsive, though I do find myself gravitating toward the more familiar virtual joystick.

These are not just your average traffic violations, Smash Cops is mission-based with 22 missions currently available. These range from tracking down and arresting a stolen sports car before he reaches the state line, to getting to a crime scene within a certain time period, to driving an obstacle course hitting as few cones as possible. In some missions you will even be attacked by other vehicles which are trying to keep you from accomplishing your objective.

It is not enough just to pull over the suspect, you need to ram the heck out of them until their vehicle is completely immobilized, but at the same time being careful not to hit pedestrians or even other cops try to help (moving in on) with your bust. All these will do damage to your vehicle. If you take too much damage to your vehicle before completing the mission, then you’ll fail. Your ramming ability needs to recharge after each use, and when ramming you should always attempt to position your vehicle at the target’s front or side for the most damage and most satisfying slow motion wreckage sequence.

At the end of the mission you are awarded up to 5 stars based on a number of factors and the cumulative number of these stars helps you unlock new vehicles and missions. Starting with your Patrol car you can work all the way up to Brutus, an armored-car like beast of a vehicle. Each class of vehicle has different stats for speed, health and attack power.

If you are having trouble with a particular mission, you can opt to use a ‘Super Cop’, a one-time use souped-up vehicle that will help you complete your mission. ‘Super Cop’ credits are periodically awarded during normal gameplay, but they are also available in packs as an IAP for real money.

The only real issue I have with Smash Cops is that in some of the later levels, sometimes when you have the enemy trapped and you are bashing him, all of a sudden he’ll just disappear and pop up away from you, back on his per-determined path. The best way I can describe it is to imagine that you were playing an FPS and you’ve got a guy cornered dead to rights, and then all of a sudden there is lag and he escapes. It is just a little annoying and frustrating.

I can see so much huge potential for this game as far as future content and/or game modes. First off, iCade support might be kind of fun. Another idea I had was it would be really cool if there was some sort of cops and robbers (online) multiplayer mode where each player takes a turn playing one of the roles in a best of 3 or so matchup, where one player tries to get across the state line and the other (the cop) tries to stop him. Other than just additional levels, perhaps new levels wcould be created with a 70′s or 80′s theme to the cars and scenery , or offer levels which take place in other countries like, England, France, Germany etc..

In Conclusion

I’ve been having an absolute blast playing Smash Cops. While the 22 levels can be completed fairly quickly, there is definitely a lot of appeal to go back and replay completed levels with different vehicles to try and improve your star score. Because the suspects run on somewhat predetermined paths, replay also helps you discover new routes you can take within the city to cut off and disable suspect vehicles more quickly. I really hope to see additional missions added to the game soon. For me, Smash Cops is a must buy and is available on the App Store for $2.99.

So the real question here has to be, has my Soul Calibur itch been scratched by this iPhone release, or is this a lazy and disappointing port? Well the truth actually lies somewhere between the two extremes, as I will explain in a little while.

Soul Calibur was originally an arcade game that was ported to the Sega Dreamcast. A 3D beat ‘em up where the characters used weapons instead of their fists, which added a sense of depth and combat variety like few other games, the real innovation was the freedom to run in eight directions, something completely unheard of at the time. Add fabulous graphics and an excellent combat system, as well as an impressive and inventive layer of content for the Dreamcast release, and an instant classic was born. The game has recently been ported to Xbox Live Arcade, and this iOS release has a lot in common with that particular build.

Soul Calibur has a convoluted background story about a quest to stop a creature called Nightmare, who is actually a young knight possessed by an evil sword, Soul Edge. A blade known as Soul Calibur is the only sword that is up to the task, and so a rather complicated, but not entirely unenjoyable tale unfolds.

You take control of one of an impressive roster of nineteen characters, and the brilliant thing here is that a lot of the characters truly feel and play differently from each other. Different weapons have different ranges and speeds, and the joy of mastering one of the fighters is a hallmark of the game.

This iPhone version has improved graphics over the original Dreamcast version, but lacks a little definition compared to the XBLA release. All the original moves, music, characters and stages are there as well, as far as I can remember.

Unfortunately, there are three massive problems that seriously make me question whether this is a worthy purchase. First of all, the big one; a complete, total and utter lack of any kind of multiplayer. No Bluetooth, local WiFi, and no online.

For me, a one on one fighting game is all about the multiplayer, with one player modes, be they story or arcade, strictly for practice. It truly baffles me how Namco have managed to leave it out. They have said that additional modes will be forthcoming, and I’m guessing this was rushed out the door to help promote Soul Calibur 5, but to have no two player mode is inexcusable.

The second big omission is the brilliant Mission Mode from the Dreamcast. In this mode you took on all kinds of crazy challenges on a RPG-lite quest that saw you earning points to unlock new content. Not here, and neither is Team Battle Mode. You do get Arcade, Time Attack, Survival, Extra Survival and Practice, as well as a museum to view artwork, but that lot really just boils to three real modes of play, not a lot when you consider that Namco are charging a whopping £7.99/$11.99 for the privilege of playing this. That is with a 20% launch discount.

The third problem is perhaps even bigger, the controls. While Namco have obviously worked hard to get the virtual controls right, you never get anywhere near the level of control needed to truly excel at the game. It isn’t really Namco’s fault, and you can get by pretty well in the default difficulty level in Arcade mode, but try anything more difficult or even Extra Survival mode and the lack of true precision really starts to tell. Advanced combos and tactical play are very difficult.

Whatever you do, don’t try going online with..oh wait, you can’t go online with this anyway.

I really could have forgiven the understandably imperfect controls if Namco had thrown in all the modes of the original and even added a few more to give iPhone owners something to shout about.

I love Soul Calibur. I loved it in the arcade and I loved it on Dreamcast, but I find this iOS version a lot more difficult to care about. The lack of multiplayer, mission mode and team battle mode is only exacerbated by the hugely inflated price. The not quite perfect controls help to enforce a feeling that, while Namco have done a great job getting the game to look and run well, they had their eye on the release of Soul Calibur 5 rather than on producing the best possible version for iPhone fans.

In Conclusion

Genuinely painful to rate a version of one of my all time favourite games so low, but as the game stands now I just can’t recommend it to anyone but the most die hard Soul Calibur fans, which is odd as they are the ones who will be the most disappointed of all. There is some fun to be had here, but lets hope they get with the updates quickly.

So when I first saw the announcement for GlitchSoft’s retro-looking gun-crazy 2D side-scrolling game, Star Marine: Infinite Ammo, there was no doubt that I would be picking it up. No Konami code needed to unlock the infinite ammo in this game, heck, they’ve even gone an put it right there in the title.

Instead of the NES’s cross-shaped d-pad and two buttons, in Star Marine, players have a virtual stick on the left which they drag left and right to move, and on the right are a jump button and a virtual d-pad which is used to control which direction you are shooting. For the most part, these controls work quite well. My only real complaint here is that with the stock assault rifle (and a few of the other weapons), the number of shooting angles feels too restrictive. You don’t get a full 360 degrees of rotation, it just cycles between 8 pre-defined angles (3, 6, 9 and 12 o’clock and the angle in between each). This isn’t really as much of an issue when you have a weapon like “the crippler”, which has a wider spray of bullets. Though I suppose that one could argue that this restriction just adds to the retro feel.

Players battle their way through 11 increasingly difficult levels. GlitchSoft has done a particularly nice job with the level design and difficulty grading, introducing new enemies based on the previous levels’ ‘epic boss’. While eleven levels may not sound like a lot, you will find yourself having to replay previous levels multiple times in order to level up your character enough to successfully complete the current level and unlock the next.

Unlocking weapons, upgrades, abilities, additional health bar units and consumables (Nuke, Icarus Wing and Stimpack) is all done via an in-game currency called gems. While gem packs can be purchased with real money (for impatient people), GlitchSoft provides players with ample opportunities for earning free gems as well. First, gems are naturally acquired as you play through levels and earn points. There is also a really cool in-game challenge system where you earn gems by completing items from a list of tasks which include things like “get 5 kills with the assault rifle”. You are also rewarded with gems just for watching some completely optional 14 second ads, which I actually found to be one of the quickest ways to level up, though the ads do not display correctly in the first level. I’m really pleased with they way it’s been implemented, in that beyond the initial $1.99 purchase price, you really don’t need to spend any more money to experience the full game.

I know it may sound a bit cliche, but the game literally is action-packed. Perhaps even a little more than the iPhone 4′s processor can handle, as there is an occasional stutter in the frame rate when there is a lot of action going on the screen at once.

At the end of a level, your data is uploaded to Game Center. Unfortunately the game appears to be blissfully unaware of whether or not you actually have an internet connection. I was recently playing the game while on a plane and it just sat there indefinitely trying to upload my score. I had to quit the game and relaunch in order to get out of the loop.

Right now Star Marine is only available for the iPhone and iPod Touch. In the future, I’d really love to be able to play this on my iPad (and if possible) the iCade. Unfortunately due to the control scheme, I don’t know how easy it’d be to get working with the iCade, but I’d love to see GlitchSoft give it a go.

In Conclusion

Star Marine: Infinite Ammo is nearly everything I hoped it’d be. With its retro feel, fun collection of weapons, varied enemies, boss battles and of course loads of bullets, it rekindled my love of the classic 2D side-scrolling shooter/platformer. I highly recommend this game!

Gamers take on the roll of a masked, butt kickin’ Luchador, roaming the streets dolling out no holds barred street stompings to all thugs that cross their path. First choose your fighter – Fatal Blaze, Daddy Brutal, Hostile or (once unlocked) Princess Achy. Each has their own style and special moves. Traveling through dangerous neighborhoods and even junkyards vicious brawlers will attack you and you must defend yourself.

First off, the graphics are outstanding. It meets every expectation of what a Lucha Libre world would look like. The comic book meets graffiti style is daring yet inviting enough to make you want to kick some butts. Though once you get excited and ready to play, you soon realize the gameplay is a bit less exciting than the graphics.

The levels are side-scrolling but you are able to move the characters back and forth a small amount. This actually becomes a bit of a detriment making it quite a bit harder to line up with your rivals and beat them. To move your character there is a virtual joystick, a control I prefer in games like this. There is also a three button system in the right corner with slightly transparent icons that represent each move that your character can do. Punching, jumping and a third button that determines the action depending on the context of what you are doing, including special moves.

The fighting is fun and there is definitely an abundance of fighting maneuvers. Where it becomes tricky is the spacing. Quite frequently the thugs attacking would stay toward the far right of the screen, exactly where my control buttons were. This made it difficult to see what I was doing and additionally what appropriate moves I needed to make. Of course being side-scrolling it’s not uncommon. Maybe on iPad where space isn’t an issue there is better luck with this. The downside is you get less accuracy and end up button mashing to get by.

In Conclusion

Street Wrestler is still loads of fun, with the festive characters, backgrounds and music it’s more than a simple fighting game. The characters also each go through all levels on their own, so there is more than enough replay value. Even with its few flaws, it’s a great source of eye candy, and theme is more than original. The Street Wrestler app is available in the App Store now for $2.99.

Players race around a track which circumnavigates whatever moon you happen to currently be on, trying to complete their laps first and pickup as many moon bucks as possible (more about these in a bit). Your vehicle is always moving forward and by tapping the right-hand side of the screen you can use your nitro booster to try to gain the edge. Holding down your finger longer will give you a nice little boost (and a little more airtime when launching off ramps), but you need to use it sparingly since each time you use it, it will consume some of your nitro. Don’t fear, you can replenish your nitro via a random power-up pickup on the course or by doing flips while airborne.

While in the air, you simply tilt your device to the left and right to perform forward and backward flips. However, you will quickly discover that a flipping vehicle in a low-gravity situation, while load of fun, is rather difficult to land (safely). This is where the gravity assist (think Tiny Wings) comes into play. Holding your finger down on the left side of the screen activates your gravity assist, which expressly pulls your vehicle back down toward the surface of the moon, helping you to slick your landing.

Lunar Racer is also both visually and aurally pleasing, featuring the same fun cartoony style that designer Ty Bader used in the Stickman Golf games and three great new soundtrack scores from composer Whitaker Trebella. The game is fairly robust in terms of content and unlockables. For each moon, there are both Amateur and Pro “tours”, as well as a three cool bonus goals which can earn you additional bonus points upon completion, helping you to unlock the Pro tour quicker. These bonus goals are usually fun tasks for you to complete during the race like “Do 4 back flips and finish 1st or second” or “Make 4 long jumps”. With races only lasting an average of 60 to 90 seconds, this is a great pick up and play game and it is easy to find time to play a few races or make an attempt at checking off one of the bonus missions.

Back to those moon bucks…these can be used to purchase cosmetic upgrades for your vehicle to change its color, body style etc, allowing you to give your vehicle a personal touch. This can be particularly helpful when playing a multiplayer game. Unfortunately, unlike Super Stickman Golf, the multiplayer component of Lunar Racer is limited to Bluetooth or local Wi-Fi. From what the devs said on a recent episode of The Portable Podcast, this is due to technical limitations. Apparently there is just too much lag in the tilt controls when playing online and they were unhappy with the quality of experience that it offered. While I applaud the guys at Noodlecake for keeping their standards high, I really hope that they can MacGyver a solution for this, as pretty much all of my iOS multiplayer gaming is online.

In Conclusion

Lunar Racer is an often unforgiving racer that (especially on the Pro Tour) will require a near flawless execution if you want to be crowned the victor. The controls do take a fair bit of getting used to, for me it was mostly a tilt sensitivity issue, this is where perhaps the addition of a sensitivity slider for the tilt might be useful. It is a satisfying single player experience, but I hoping a way can be found to get online multiplayer to work in the future, as I can easily see online races being just as frenetic and fun as the online multiplayer mode of Super Stickman Golf.

Indeed, it would be easy to mistake Run Roo Run for a custom Scribblenauts level at first glance, but to prove that looks can be deceptive, the games are pole apart in terms of gameplay and content.

Run Roo Run is described by the developer as a ‘micro’ platformer, with each level only one screen big and taking just a few seconds to complete. The game is an auto run type of platformer, with Roo, the central character automatically running, with the only control given to the player, at least initially, being the ability to jump. At a basic level, this is a lot like many endless runners, but confined to a single, complex screen and far more inventive.

You must guide Roo across the Australian landscape in a whopping total of 420 levels. Yes that is four hundred and twenty levels, a stunning amount, even if many of them only take seconds to finish. The developer has even promised a weekly drop of an extra 10 levels, meaning that this is certainly a game that you are going to get your money’s worth from.

The levels start off very simple, but soon turn into devious, trap filled mazes. Roo soon finds many objects, such as cannons and swing ropes, in each chapter to help her and even the ability to walk on the ceiling to avoid traps, and you will need to learn how to utilise all these items to get through some of the tougher levels. Each time you jump you leave an arrow to help you learn where best to place your next jump if you die. It is a simple but effective way to learn from your mistakes.

It is surprisingly addictive, and crucially creates that ‘one more go’ feeling, especially on the more difficult, ‘extreme’ levels. 

The game has a cutesy look that I quite like, but I feel that the animation on Roo is a little bit wooden and could be improved. Run Roo Run has a bright and breezy feel to it, which is helped by the music but I have to say that it does look a little bit too much like Scribblenauts for my liking, and loses a little bit of identity because of it.

The game has full leaderboards and achievements, which is always a welcome plus. The fact that you are going to get 10 free levels a week in addition to the 420 included is probably worth the price of entry alone.

In fact the only thing I feel is missing is some kind of level editor. The quick fix nature of the game and stages seems perfect for such an option, and I am guessing that with the developers history with Scribblenauts, they must have considered including one. I hope that one is in the works, as that would really make this game fly.

In Conclusion

Overall, this is a great little game with a big wedge of levels to really keep you satisfied. The sheer value alone makes the game worth it, and although many of the actual gameplay features have been seen before, when taken with the ‘micro’ nature of the levels, I can heartily recommend this game.

There is also an iPad version of the game available for $1.99.

Well simple is right, but that’s about it.

Ghost Snap is yet another “augmented reality” app, which in this case simply means “put semi-transparent digital ghost stickers on pictures” app.

Ok, going into this I knew what it was so I really can’t say that part was surprising or disappointing. It does put a “ghost” into your picture. Snap Ghost, however, does not do this well at all. The ghosts are simply images that are slapped on top of pictures you either have in your photo library or that you take on the fly. You can move the ghosts around by dragging them with your finger, double tap to flip them and pinch/zoom to resize them. You can also use two fingers to adjust the angle of the phantasms that have invaded your iDevice’s camera. However, the amount of time you will spend moving the ghostly images around your screen, you will likely have lost the photo opportunity. It is best to just use a picture already taken then add the ghost afterwards.

When you fire the app up, it immediately tells you how you can get rid of the ads, get more “ghosts” and remove the watermarks on photos by upgrading to PRO ($1.99 in-app purchase). Wait, I thought this app was “Free, Fun and Simple!”. I am such a sucker for descriptions sometimes, you know, thinking they describe the product I am downloading, not the product I might get if I jump through hoops or pay them money.

Let me be clear here, I have no issue with ad-funded apps, but I expect to be told “This is an ad-supported (or Lite/Trial) version in the description. When I read it was free, and saw the screens available on iTunes, I naturally assumed it was simply a free little photo manipulation app.

The reviews on iTunes are also misleading with a number of them being 5 star reviews and shout the awesomeness of this app with things like “Perfect merging”, and “Loved this tiny little tool, the “ghost” charactor (sic) can be embedded into my photos seamlessly, works better than I expected!!! Highly recommended!” .

Looking at the users, most have only reviewed 2 apps, both super-positive reviews on apps from the same company. Once again, we are seeing developers artificially inflating their scores on poor products like this one. It makes sense for developers to rate their own product highly, but to try and inflate your score with multiple accounts like we are seeing on this app is incredibly disheartening.

In Conclusion

I almost feel bad giving this app a 1 star rating, but it is utterly useless, especially when there are an obscene amount of apps that do the exact same thing all over the iTunes store, and some are definitely worth paying for. This one is not.

For what it is worth, my 4 year-old son enjoyed seeing his picture with a “ghost baby” for around 10 seconds, but then lost interest and wanted to go watch Yo Gabba Gabba!.

From the the moment the lights go green, it’s “engines go” as you race around some truly stunning looking tracks. The dust is flying and so are the other cars as you try to nudge, boost and smash your way to the head of the pack. With no brakes, the game quickly becomes a matter of mastering steering, drifting and well-timed use of your limited nitro boosts.

There are additional nitro and money pickups that randomly appear throughout the course. The money can be used to purchase new vehicles or upgrade the specs of your existing one. A number of steering options are available, but I’ve personally settled on the tank-style controls (separate clockwise and counter-clockwise turn buttons), which feels very natural and responsive.

Mini Motor Racing features over 20 different track layouts (and their mirrors), there is even a cool Fruit Ninja inspired track. Add changing day/night and weather conditions and the total number of unique tracks is rather high. The level of detail on these tracks is quite breathtaking, allowing you to see the dust flying as you make your way around the dirt tracks. Simply put, this game really looks amazing!

The single-player Career mode is massive and you can play with up to 4 players over Bluetooth or local WiFi. There are also Game Center achievements and leaderboards as well as the ability to mirror races from your iPad 2 to a TV screen (via AirPlay).

Unfortunately if you want to play on both your iPhone and iPad you’ll have to shell out twice for the game (or 2x the iPhone-only release…yuck) since it is not a Universal app. So I cannot comment on how it plays on the iPhone, but I’d imagine it’s just as much fun. Hopefully The Binary Mill will see fit to make the current iPad-only release a universal app sometime in the future.

In Conclusion

I cut my teeth in the arcade playing a lot of Super Offroad, so top-down racers have always held a special draw for me. Mini Motor Racing HD delivers the goods on all fronts. Amazing visuals, excellent physics engine, car upgrades, achievements and leaderboards, all the hooks I need to keep me coming back for more laps.

I remember owning a Street Fighter title on the Gameboy Advance when I was younger – and one thing I immediately appreciated about this title is how it seems to have remained faithful to its gaming heritage. A snazzy animated introduction featuring fan-favorite Ryu perfectly sets the scene… It’s just you, 18 playable characters and a whole load of button-bashing (or in this case, screen-tapping) to do!

At its core – Volt is very much a pricey “upgrade” to last March’s installment, Street Fighter IV. Whilst the core gameplay appears to be the same, there are a few enticing features bundled into this package that will definitely make it appealing to hardcore fans of the franchise or new-comers looking for a substantial fighting game. There are three new characters: Vega (who uses Wolverine-like hand blades), Cody (who whoops me every single time I’m up against him) and Balrog (not quite Lord of the Rings) … Oh wait! Make that four if you include the unlockable character Akuma!

More importantly, however, is Capcom’s addition of online multiplayer (via Wi-Fi only) and the all-new “Battle Network” mode allowing you to team up with your mates. I was skeptical about it all at first; the concept of team-play and drop-in/drop-out battles (when “Fight Request” is switched on) being ideas that usually work well on paper, but when executed on gadgets such as a mobile phone quite often fall flat on their faces. Boy was I wrong! Within seconds I was being match-made to all sorts of opponents from all around the globe, getting my bottom handed to me by strangers I have never met and would never want to meet again. This is all neatly tied together with win/loss records, leader board rankings and a “challenge yourself” type bingo-card which recommends you win games in certain ways to earn more points for your customizable Street Fighter avatar.

I know I’m nowhere near good enough to head online (which warrants my criticism of maintaining an insanely steep learning curve), but I must say this is in no way helped by a slightly dodgy “controls” translation from games console to iPhone. Joysticks are all well and good, but I often find moving left and right using the small icon in the bottom left hand corner of the screen provided extremely counter-productive. This isn’t the first game I’ve encountered that uses this touch-screen joystick mechanism to control your characters, both and Rayman 2 use the exact same idea and again I feel there must be some other way. Perhaps it takes some getting used to? I’m not sure. One thing I am sure of though is that unlike GTA and Rayman, Street Fighter IV is a 90-second fast-paced action spectacle where correct timing is vital – and accidentally swiping your finger off the radius of the control so that you’re left standing still isn’t exactly helpful.

In Conclusion

All in all though, controls are just a minor niggle that rarely detract from the level of detail and quality that is evident in this game. Whilst it didn’t keep me playing for too long, the time I did spend with the title was very enjoyable – and I’m sure fans of arcade fighting games (or indeed of the Street Fighter franchise) will enjoy endless hours of hardcore fighting fun with this game (provided you have a Wi-Fi or home internet connection).
