Plunderland Offers An Amusing Taste of The Pirate Life

Avast ye landlubbers listen up, I know like me, you’ve just been waiting for a game with pirates, cannons, gold, ghosts, sea monsters, angry natives and even acrobatic sharks, and now’s your chance. Plunderland, the latest title from developer Johnny Two Shoes, is a creative adventure game unlike anything you’ve played before. You are Captain Peg Leg’s ghostly spirit, and you must help your ragtag band of wannabe pirates steal back your treasure. This is accomplished through a combination of sailing, cannon blasting and the occasional sailor tossing. The more damage you do to the enemies, the more gold that appears for you to collect.

Plunderland demands a good deal of coordination from its players, resulting in a control scheme combining both tilt and touch that can take a little getting used to. Basic ship navigation is easy, simply tilting your device left or right will send your craft crashing over the waves in your desired direction. Dragging your finger on the ship will adjust a trajectory line showing where your cannon(s) will fire, release your finger to set the cannon balls a-flying. Sounds easy enough right? Well not when your in the middle of a storm and your ship is being furiously rocked back and forth by rapidly coming waves. This is where the controls start to break down a bit. A sticking point with some players, arguing that this is a flaw in the game’s design. Instead, I see this as a courageous move by Johnny Two Shoes toward instilling a bit of realism, without the seasickness. Sure, it can be frustrating at times, but who ever said a pirate’s life on the high seas was easy!

The game offers players their choice of three Campaigns and a Survival mode, consisting of a three level tutorial, 2 seven-level campaigns and a survival mode with three increasing difficulties, each of which contain 10 waves of enemies. Each of these modes will require you to complete one level before the next is unlocked. As you progress through the game, you will also unlock a variety of upgrades which can be purchased using whatever of Peg Leg’s gold you have successfully recovered. These upgrades can be a better ship, cannon upgrade or a new bowspirit (with a special ability). Personally I felt the upgrades were a tad bit too easily obtainable. You could literally just keep on playing one of the more gold-filled levels over and over again until you had enough to buy whatever you wanted. Perhaps restricting them a little more until you’ve unlocked certain levels would make the game a little more challenging. Treasure hunters can also attempt to find the hidden “cod piece” (a cod’s head) hidden somewhere in each level as well. Always remember to to check for buried treasure, after all, you ARE a pirate!

From cannonball trajectories, to the ragdoll reactions of the pirates and sailors, the game’s physics engine seems to handle whatever you throw at it. Plunderland’s visuals are absolute gold. The stunning cartoon-style vector graphics, take full advantage of the iPhone 4’s Retina display. Almost a little reminiscent of the inhabitants of God Finger, they add a bit of levity and give the game a fantastic overall look and character. An expert blend of seagulls, crashing waves, wind and cannon ball blasts create the perfect aural stimulation and set the scene, drawing you in.

In Conclusion

In a time when the App Store is rapidly seeing title after title of the same re-skinned Doodle Jump or Bejewelled clone, it’s fantastic to see a game so fresh and original. Fun pickup and play gameplay, only slightly tainted by the amount of time it takes to master the controls and get your proper sea legs. The only things on my wishlist would obviously be even more campaigns and upgrades and a global leaderboard to be able to compare my treasure frecovery skills against my mateys. Arrr, what be you watiin’ for, grab your copy of Plunderland today! Aye, me parrot concurs.

Medieval HD: A Stylish Castle Defence Game Worth Exploring

Unlike a lot of the castle defence games in which your opponent brings an onslaught to your doors, without giving you a chance to retaliate, Medieval HD lets you go head to head with the computer player in an all-out war waged between the two castles. In the beginning, you’ll be armed with only your trusty crossbow, but as you accumulate gold from all the enemy units that you slaughter you’ll be granted access to catapults, soldiers, horsemen, archers and axe-men which you can buy in-game to fight for your cause.

In addition to all of the units that you can purchase, you can upgrade your crossbow; damage and faster reload speed for the primary attack but also additional arrows; piercing that can hit multiple enemies, fiery arrows, multiple shot, multiple shot fire arrows, even boulders and bombs can be used against the enemy. Whilst the computer doesn’t have a crossbow it has a few units that you don’t; suicide bombers who try and rush your castle, and balloons that shoot arrows and fire arrows at your units and your castle. This makes the game fairly well balanced, in general.

Having said this, the user interface can be tiresome and clunky; the swipe to fire mechanic gets old quickly as you have to constantly do it every time you want to fire an arrow; even the auto fire scheme forces you to tap each time you want a shot fired which can wear out your fingers fairly quickly. Selecting weapons is more difficult than it should be too; you tap a button for a new weapon at the bottom of the screen and fire it, then you have to select a new weapon; it would have been so much better to have the game automatically revert you to the basic crossbow bolt as it’s the fastest to reload. Switching back and forth between weapons can get tedious for this reason and switching weapons becomes essential to take down the barrage of enemy units.

Playing your own units against the enemy fast becomes essential. Archers are some of the best support units as they can stand their ground in the middle of the screen firing arrows at the castle and enemy units if they get close; we also liked to deploy a catapult or two to bombard the enemy castle. If you get enough of your own units set up you can use the crossbow to take out the enemy units before they get to yours. You can also win a round by capturing the enemy flag; simply have a swordsman, axeman or horse cross the screen and let them take the flag automatically to your side of the screen. It’s entirely possible to win the game in either of these two ways just so long as you’re keeping an eye on your own health.

Medieval HD sports nine different environments which look stunning; it’s unfortunate that the game doesn’t utilise dynamic lighting because the pre-rendered castles stick out like a sore thumb on the night time backgrounds. And, your men don’t tend to carry the flag across the screen, merely just have it trailing behind them! But otherwise the presentation is really good—audio especially; it’s just a shame that the developer spoiled the beautifully presented interface with the functionality.

The game starts slowly, which can be a turn off; however, once you purchase some upgrades and start to battle your way through the never-ending series of levels, it gets really fun. The only gripe that we have is that once you’ve purchased all of the upgrades then there isn’t much left to do; a disadvantage of the endless mode for any game.

In Conclusion

Overall, Medieval HD is well worth a purchase; it looks stunning and the versus style of the game is certainly refreshing. Whilst it may not have the longevity it definitely has the style, polish and gameplay to make it worth the purchase. If you’re not sure, certainly try the Lite version available from the App Store.

Mirror’s Edge Finally Arrives For the iPhone

It’s been a long time coming, but finally after almost a year of waiting, and an iPad release, Mirror’s Edge has finally found it’s way to the iPhone platform. Based on the character and world created in hit console game of the same name, Mirror’s Edge has you taking on the role of Faith Connors. Reminder : Apple Keynote Live Stream Available Today At 1PM EST

Just a friendly reminder that today at 1PM EST (10 AM PST) Apple is holding their annual keynote where they are expected to unveil the next generation of iPod Touch (and some other goodies). Unlike in previous years, Apple will actually be streaming this event live!

Here are my predictions of what we’ll see:

5th gen iPod Touch with one or two cameras for FaceTime, Retina Display, upgraded internal components to match the iPhone 4 and perhaps even increased storage above that of the iPhone 4. I’d also expect a more squared-off form factor like the iPhone 4.
New iPod Nano (square shaped)
Next generation of Apple TV (iTV) priced at $99 with a new subscription based content service and/or the ability to watch Hulu and/or Netflix
Roll out of Game Center and iOS v4.1
Mirror’s Edge for the iPhone will be featured and released TODAY (already out in New Zealand) at a price of $4.99.

GameSalad Tosses Traditional App Development Methods Out The Window

So you have a great idea for a casual iPhone game, but don’t know how to program in Xcode or perhaps you have no coding skills whats-so-ever. All hope is not lost, GameSalad could very well be the perfect solution for you. Gendai Games’ GameSalad is a visual, drag & drop based tool that tremendously simplifies game development, allowing just about anyone to quickly build fairly complex 2D casual games for the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch without even having to touch Xcode. So what you may have thought was impossible before could actually be within your reach. While GameSalad eliminates one major barrier to entry of app development (a knowledge of coding) it unfortunately still requires a Mac.

GameSalad’s most basic version is completely FREE and allows you to get started experimenting right away. This version will allow you to publish your games to the web, playable from within the Safari browser (on the Mac) using a special extension, but you cannot build an iPhone App. The next step up, for $99 a year gives you some additional debugging tools and allows you to publish an unlimited number of iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch titles as well. Although you must also have an Apple iPhone Developer Program Membership which will cost an additional $99 a year. There is also a professional package available for almost $2k per year which adss some additional support and features including the ability to include iAds in your app, but the $99 express package is probably enough for most aspiring developers. For less than $200 you could be on your way to App Store stardom (success is not guaranteed). It’s worth noting that Gendai Games does not take any royalties on the games you develop with GameSalad.

One look at the GameSalad forums and you’ll see that creator Gendai Games has not only conceived a new development tool, but formed a close knit a community of supportive indie app developers as well. Offering help, words of wisdom, lessons learned and more, the GameSalad community appears to be quick to revel in the success of one of their own and always happy to lend a hand to a struggling first-timer. There have been several prolific GameSalad users who have developed some modestly successful titles using the product.

Jonathan Mulcahy has created a growing library of games (with a Sue Grafton-like naming scheme) for the iPhone/iPad including Z is for Zombie, F is for Falling, Obliteration HD and (my favorite) V is for Vortex, which was actually featured a few times by Apple. When I asked Jon why he chose to use GameSalad he said ” I chose GameSalad in the first place because of how quick I was able to get a working prototype. I spent over a month pouring over an iPhone Application book I purchased, and in two weeks I had a complete working prototype of a game. A week later the entire game was fleshed out, and stood waiting for the artwork.” And with regards to his experience with the product he went on to say, “It has it’s limitations obviously, but for my dollar, there is no easier entry point to getting apps made for iOS. The community is very helpful, and I’m always amazed at what people come up with, even with GS’s limitations.”

Another of GameSalad’s success stories is Utopian Games. Darren Spencer, head of Utopian Games, has created several smaller titles using GameSalad including DropZone, Jungle Bug Rock & Roll, BuzzBee and Ghost Bash. Most recently, Utopian Games ported their popular PC puzzle game Bumps to the iPhone platform using the tool. Utopian Games has experience coding apps via traditional methods, having previously released Tumble Jumble, so I was curious why they chose to do the port using GameSalad. He told me “Bumps was ported in less than 2 months using GS, it was so fast to work with, we even managed to squeeze in 4 great mini games and 5 micro games.” Bumps has broken into the top 100 games, climbing as high as 69th place.

Now I don’t want to make GameSalad sound like a magical seed that will instantly produce an app that will bring you fame and fortune. As with any development tool, not every game that comes out of GameSalad will be a success or frankly…good for that matter. Like the many traditionally Xcode-developed games also stocking the virtual shelves of the App Store, your mileage may vary, the titles developed using GamaSalad are a mixed bag quality-wise. Crap in = crap out no matter what development tool you use! If you are going to develop an iDevice game, you still need to be able to come up with a fun idea, create good looking visuals (and sound) and put in the time to optimize and play test your title if you want to be successful. To that end, Gendai Games does offer a decent set of tutorials and guidelines for optimizing the performance of your game. While they may provide the tools, success will depend on what you make of them.

GameSalad is not perfect and it’s not going to help you create the next N.O.V.A. or Archetype, it has its share of issues and limitations. Gendai Games clearly states that games are “limited to 2D and single user, as GameSalad does not support 3D or multiplayer games yet.” In the past I have admittedly experienced some longer than average load times on GameSalad developed titles on my 2nd gen iPod Touch, but have seen some improvement in this area recently. Another common complaint is that there is no formal support for OpenFeint or as far as I can tell any of the current popular social network platforms including AGON or Plus+. If Gendai Games could find a way to implement Apple’s upcoming Game Center platform into GameSalad, this could be a huge win for them. One read through the forums and you’ll see that the tool still has some bugs, but then again, name a development kit that isn’t.

Okay, so now you are probably wondering what my experience with GameSalad has been. Unfortunately, since I don’t own a Mac, I have not been able to try the tool out for myself. I keep hoping that I’ll see an announcement, welcoming Windows users to the fold, but I’m not holding my breath. iDevice app development has always and sadly will probably always remain an activity confined to the Mac platform. If (unlike me) you own a Mac and a yearning to create a your own iPhone or iPad game, then there is really no reason not to download the free basic version of GameSalad. Give it a try and see what you can create, you might just be surprised. Mac users can point their Safari browsers to the GameSalad website and try out some current users’ games for free, like a try before you buy for the App Store. If you enjoy using this tool and want to take a chance at turning your web-based game into an iPhone app, then $200 seems like a fairly small investment.

A Tiger Woods Killer? Gameloft Reveals First Screenshots of Real Golf 2011

Gameloft just released the first screenshots for its upcoming ‘Real Golf 2011′ game for the iPhone and iPad. Fully licensed with 10 golf pros and 10 famous courses, this game steers away from the cartoony graphics of their Let’s Golf!® franchise, instead going for realism that will compete head to head with EA Mobile’s Tiger Woods PGA TOUR®. It’s nice to see some fresh blood in this category! While Tiger Woods is currently still my favorite golfing game on the platform, it has seen little by way of updates (save for one additional 99¢ DLC course, Hazeltine National) since it’s launch 1 1/3 years ago.

No official graphics specs have been released for Real Golf 2011 yet, but I suspect that this will support Retina display graphics and Gameloft lists online multiplayer as an option, so this will very likely kill Tiger Woods on the platform. Watch out EA Mobile, it looks like if you want to hang onto that green jacket, then you’ll need to reinvigorate your franchise with an updated title. Gameloft has not announced pricing or a release date yet for Real Golf 2011, but the trailer below does say “Available in September”!

Fastar! Proves It’s Hip To Be Square

It’s a rarity to see a perfect game come along, but Cat in a Box games has achieved the impossible with Fastar! They’ve also done it with one of the most creative premises I’ve seen in a long time.

Fastar! is an acronym. Normally, I hate acronyms, but this one is as awesome as the game itself. It stands for Fight Angry Squares: The Action RPG (an acronym inside an acronym has to violate SOME rule of grammar!). This very descriptive title says all it needs to. This game is an action RPG in which you fight squares, and boy are they angry! I understand if this sounds strange at first. Trust me, it is more fantastical than you can even imagine.

The game takes all of the sloppy, overdone angles out of the genre and isn’t ashamed to admit it. There’s no storyline, no map, no NPCs, and no experience system. You can run from left to right or right to left (the latter only returns you to the beginning of the level), you can swing your sword, and you can slightly jump. Jumping isn’t needed, but it can be fun for style-sake. Instead of experience, you can use money you get from killing squares to refill your health and upgrade your stats when you hit the periodic safe zones. Your character also has magic to use. At the beginning of the game, you can pick from about a dozen spells so you’ll have one to use on the level. You can even be extra bold and choose none if you’re tough enough to try.

So what of these squares that keep being mentioned? That’s right, I can read your thoughts. Be afraid. Well, the squares are the baddies in this game. They really are just squares of different colors and sizes. Based on the colors, they will attack in different patterns. Be afraid of the black and pink squares, and the largest purple ones. That’s all the warning I’ll give you on colors. Still, the simplicity grants the game some great character. I’m not sure what is about the fact that you are attacking abstract cuboidal objects, but it just makes the game more fun. Another great piece of flavor to the squares is that they’ll steal money from you if they beat you. It’s neat to see the tables get turned in games, and the levity takes the pain out of losing.

So what is the goal of Fastar? To finish the level. There are multiple difficulties (one where the squares can even use the same magic that you can), and several modes (24 in all!). While you can likely finish the easy mode in under five minutes, hard can take about fifteen or more. In the end, there’s a global leaderboard of people’s fastest finish times in each mode. You only get to post your three initials, so prepare for the return of that arcade champion, “SEX.”

The part where this game absolutely won me over was the customization it allows. Not only do you get a choice of your magic, you can totally recolor your character. My personal one is grey-scale, but I’ve seen several creative combinations on the leaderboard (which posts your character’s image by your initials). Also, the game has quite a few control options. This is great for a disabled person, like myself. I can’t count how many games I’ve purchased only to learn that I can’t play them because of my non-working hand. The four control schemes are:

Tilt – Tilt the device to move, tap anywhere to attack.
Swipe – Swipe to move, tap anywhere to attack.
Gamepad – Buttons for left and right, tap anywhere else to attack.
One-Handed – “Roll” a bar at the bottom to move, tap above the bar to attack.

It’s really nice to see a game remember that not everyone likes a particular scheme.

In Conclusion

Fastar! has become one of my favorite iPhone games ever released and has a coveted spot on my home page (along with Sneezies, Skee-Ball, Street Fighter IV, & Poker Quest). I’ve even gifted the app to every friend I have with an iPhone. I can’t recommend this title enough. Everyone with an iPhone should own it. (NOTE: At the time of publishing this review, Fastar! is still available for FREE on the App Store…so really, what are you waiting for?!)

Week In Review : Five To Watch

Here are this week’s five releases that I predict are going places.

R-Type (EA Mobile) – $1.99

EA Mobile faithfully recreates this arcade classic on the iPhone. With the distinction of being one of the toughest arcade games to beat, I’m happy to say that this version of R-Type is as unforgiving as ever. EA hasn’t dumbed down the game to make it easy for today’s gotta have it now crowd. Blast off and strike the evil Bydo Empire! Pilot your futuristic fighter, the R-9a “Arrowhead,” and attack wave after wave of Bydo baddies in old-school side-shooter style. Fly through 8 levels, with a choice of two difficulty levels and 3 different control options – tilt, touch, and virtual D-Pad. Each control scheme has its pros and cons, but you should find one that will suit your play style. Upgrade with new weapons, power-ups, and attachments, which you’ll need to be triumphant in the game’s 8 epic boss-battles. If you are looking for some challenging fun retro gaming, then R-Type is going to be touch to beat (literally).

Knight’s Rush (MoreGames Entertainment/Chillingo) – $2.99

Another week, another amazing title from Chillingo, I think I’m starting to sound like a broken record. Anyone who got as addicted as I did to the (entirely too short) free game A Quest Of Knights Onrush, you’ll be ecstatic to know that it has been developed into a full and proper game called Knight’s Rush! This worth sequel to Knight’s Onrush. While Knights Onrush was a tower defense style game, and “Quest” was an endurance run Knight’s Rush is a full action platformer with eight worlds and over fifty different types of enemies and huge end-of world boss battles. The game’s 40 levels along with the charming cartoon graphics and sounds are sure to provide hours upon hours of entertainment. I have no doubt that Knight’s Rush will be another massively popular title for Chillingo.

Super Mega Worm (Deceased Pixel LLC) – $2.99

How’s this for a storyline…Mother Earth is on the brink of extinction and has released her last defense, the Great Death Worm, Wojira. Wojira is on a revenge mission to destroy all the Human parasites. Crawl and eat your way through waves of humans and their robots of destruction. You are the last line of defense, can you save the world? You are a giant worm wreaking havoc on humanity by eating whatever people or animals get in your way. The premise of Super Mega Worm alone has me hooked. Couple that with cool retro 16-bit styling and this one smells like a winner to me. I’ve had a chance to take this one for a spin and it is a some mindless fun! With the promise of new levels, more stuff to eat, more game modes, special powers, Game Center and iPad support on the way soon, Super Mega Worm’s $2.99 price tag is looking even more palatable.

Dead Runner (Distinctive Developments Ltd) – 99¢

Dead Runner is a unique take on the endurance run genre, immersing you in the action with a first-person point of view. Both creepy, and exhilarating, this Blair Witch-like experience has you lost, running aimlessly through an eerie moonlit forest of dead trees. Is someone behind you? You’d better not stop and find out! The path ahead comes into focus just in time as you carve your way through the thick fog, trying to avoid crashing into the trees speeding by. This is a fun and different take on the genre, one which is sure to spawn its own set of copycats. I’ve already done a fairly extensive preview of Dead Runner, which you can read here. Needless to say, Dead Runner is definitely worth a look.

Netflix (Netflix Inc.) – FREE

The Netflix app has now been updated to allow viewing on your iPhone and iPod Touch. Just download this free app and you can instantly watch TV shows & movies streaming from Netflix. If you have an unlimited Netflix membership, then you will be able to stream content directly to your phone via wifi or 3GS. You can queue items for instant viewing, your rental queue or even resume watching a show or movie where you left off on your TV or computer! In the brief tests I’ve done with this app so far, it look great over both wifi and 3GS. If you already have a Netflix subscription, then there is no excuse not to download the app. If you don’t have an account, maybe it’s time to get one, or at least a free trial.
