Kicking things off is Godsrule: War of Mortals, a free-to-play social RTS game from SEGA that pits players armies against one other in either one on one or 2 vs. 2 teams cross-platform play.

Next up is a more kid-friendly freebie, Sago Mini Sound Box. A fun, free, colorful toy for kids aged 2-4 to explore the world of sound by tilting and tapping, this is the first of the apps to be released by Toca Boca’s newly formed Sago Sago studio.

The fur will be flying in Bombcats, a new free-to-play physics puzzle game from Radiangames and publisher Chillingo. Players must use seven different types of Bombcats (each with their own unique abilities to rescue the Bobkittens in 190 levels of gameplay!

Star Trek Rivals, a collectible card game based on Star Trek and the new Star Trek Into Darkness feature film. With over 100 cards it looks like it could be an entertaining one to check out, especially for trekkies.

The final freebie of the night is ERA Deluxe, an improved version of Forest Moon Games’ original ERA TD which came out late last year. This new version is free-to-play and I’m told that “you can enjoy the game thoroughly without having to buy any IAPs, they are only designed to enable quick access to level-up or Special Skills”.

At the 99¢ price point we see a couple of sequels of really popular iOS casual games, the first of which is Miniclip’s Gravity Guy 2. Everyone’s favorite fast running flipper is back with 7 clones to choose from, each with their own unique abilities. Run, jump and collect while staying out of trouble in this rich looking sequel to an iOS classic.

One of the most popular ball tossing / can-toppling series is back with Can Knockdown 3. Obviously the third title in the Can Knockdown series, this time around there are new puzzles and challenges to go along with the usual destructive gameplay. It is on sale for 50% off at launch.

After the successful launch of the modernized version of Jordan Mechner’s Karateka last year, now we get the classic 1984 Apple II version of the game with all the original graphics and sound effects, but with some really nice controls adapted for the touchscreen. Karateka Classic is a great bit of fan service for those wanting to revisit the original that started it all.

Next we have a beautiful looking 3D puzzle/adventure/hidden object game called Jacob Jones and The Bigfoot Mystery : Episode 1 I don’t know much about this one, but it certainly is striking.

Last, but definitely not least is the much-anticipated iOS release of the award-winning simultaneous-turn-based strategy game Frozen Synapse. Carefully translated for the iPad, this version contains a massive 55-mission single player campaign as well as cross-platform multiplayer gameplay with multiple gameplay modes and a ‘powerful skirmish generator’. Fans of tactical games will NOT want to miss this one.

Kicking things off is a new free-to-play version of Full Fat’s popular and unorthodox golfing franchise, Flick Golf! which in reality plays more like curling than actual golf. From the little bit I’ve had a chance to play thus far, it looks like the proverbial pay wall is mostly for unlocking content more quickly, but there is plenty of flicking for free and with a new ‘Legends!” game mode, achievements and Facebook/Game Center friend leaderboards. Whether you are a newcomer to the series or have played the previous titles, Flick Golf! Free is an easy recommendation.

Also free is the much anticipated Sid Meier’s Ace Patrol. A free-to-play strategy game set in World War I, in which players manage squadrons of fighter planes and try to “roll, slip, and loop to get the drop on enemy aces”. Upgradable fighters and both a single player campaign and local and online asynchrouns multiplayer, this one is bound to be a big hit.

Finally for freebies there is also a fairly robust looking cartoony defense game, Cute Heroes from the folks at Alawar Entertainment.

For paid titles, Indie dev Kevin Ng returns to the app store with IMPOSSIBLE ROAD, a minimalistic arcade game in which players attempt to navigate a ball as it rolls down a winding roller coaster like track, making it though as many gates as possible. Apparently there is even a built-in way to cheat, which Ng actually encourages, baiting players with the following line in the app description “…when you learn how to cheat the game, and you discover that it is rewarded not punished, the leaderboards will belong to you.”

Inspired by the classic 80′s game QiX, Crescent Moon Games’ latest publishing effort, Dig! expands on the area capturing gameplay with “even more enemies with different movement or attack strategies”. You are a bumbling archaeologist trying to collect artifacts to save not only his job but the museum as well. Unfortunately you’ve been cursed by your Mummy nemesis (because we all have those) who makes your job much more difficult. Developed by Tasty Poison, Dig! looks like a fun and frantic new twist on a classic.

Night Flight developers Rebel Twins is back with Daddy Was A Thief, a polished looking endless faller/smasher in which you are an out of work thief just trying to provide for his family, escaping capture by smashing through everything that gets in your way and grabbing power-ups and speed boosts whenever you can.

Ravensburger Digital, who did an excellent job bringing (among others) physical board games Whoowasit? and San Juan to iOS, now tackle Alea’s board game “Las Vegas”. It is a dice-based strategy game in which players try to capture casinos in order to earn the most money after four rounds of play. Compete against AI players or up to four humans locally or online via Game Center to see who is the true high roller of the group. I’ve been having some pre-release fun with this one, expect a full review shortly after release.

StoryToys is back with an all-new interactive 3D book app for your kids based on the classic fairy tale Beauty and the Beast. It utilizes the same 3D technology and minigame style of their previous titles. Your kids will be drawn into Belle’s story like never before as they “help her father escape from a hungry wolf, find a way through a snow-covered maze to pick a rose for Belle, and test their ping-pong skills in a fun game against the Beast”. I’m certain my girls will have a blast with this one.

Last but not least is the charming tower defense game Go Home Dinosaurs. Poor little Todd Rex must stop hordes Dinosaurs intent on stealing his steaks from his BBQ and it’s up to you to send these uninvited party guests running for home (thus the title). I have previously played some of the PC release of this game and it was a lot of fun, with really cute characters, creative armaments and even boss battles. A promising new entry in the iOS tower defense genre, I’m really looking forward to checking this one out. Previously responsible for a number of high-profile titles on the PC and consoles, this port of Go Home Dinosaurs marks Fire Hose Games’ first foray into iOS development.

On this week’s episode Trevor and I discuss how quickly the App Store has grown in such a short period of time and the huge number of app updates that rolled out this week, just in time for Apple’s May 1st retina graphics deadline.

We also dive into a number of this week’s new App releases including the retro Trekkie fan service that is Star Command and the port of the Facebook game Angry Birds Friends. We try to decide if the gorgeous looking Paper Titans is more than just skin deep and laugh at the ridiculous fun of a Mexican Zoo filled with zombie animals in Zoombies: Animales de la Muerte!.

Speaking of laughing, I think I say the word ‘hilarious’ a lot in this episode, it must have been a particularly funny week for iOS.

Before I get into the pricier apps, lets start with a game that is expected to be released sometime tomorrow as a free-to-play title, Angry Birds Friends. This iOS port of Rovio’s more social version of Angry Birds currently playable on Facebook has players flinging birds and knocking down pigs as usual, but adds special power-ups and players compete against their friends and family to be the one wearing the golden crown for each level. If it plays just like the Facebook version, you earn an in-game currency called “Bird Coins” by playing tournaments, getting gifts and as daily rewards. The coins can be exchanged for single-use power ups and other purely cosmetic items. You can bet Rovio will be making a mint off the IAP on this title. Let’s just hope they finally embrace the universal app.

Next up is Mind Blitz, a fresh take on the traditional game of memory, complete with achievements, high scores, penalty cards and power ups that can be earned over time. Flip over cards to find matching pairs and successful matches fill up the power meter to give you points to purchase special power up cards in later levels. This looks like a fun update to the childhood classic.

Prolific app developer Triniti Interactive comes out swinging with their latest game, Oh My Heroes!. A cartoony hack and slash title, it features both a mission-based single player campaign as well as four different real-time online multiplayer game types. With five different hero types to choose from as well as upgradable properties and power ups this looks like another fun game of mindless mayhem from the folks at Triniti.

AppEndix returns with a second batch of murders for you to solve in Crimes & Puzzlement 2, which is based on the murder mystery puzzle book series from Lawrence Treat. You are the detective, read the case notes, explore the sketch of the crime scene and then answer a series of questions to try to solve the crime.

And now it’s time to open up your wallets…

First up is Zoombies: Animales de la Muerte! a game starring zombie zoo animals and an abundance of weaponry with which to decapitate and otherwise dispatch of them. A path drawing game of a different ilk, players use their fingers to trace the path which their deadly projectiles will take when slicing, dicing and even chupacabra-ing (I guess that’s a verb right?) the undead to…err…death. Originally planned as a WiiWare title, the game was too big (size-wise) for Nintendo to accept, so it looks like their loss will be our gain tonight.

Paper Titans is a gorgeous looking papercraft puzzle platformer from Blitz Games Studios, the same folks that developed Kumo Lumo and console titles like Epic Mickey 2! Set in a rich world built out of paper, players start by actually folding their papercraft character on screen and dragging a directional arrow for them to move to collect three stars in each level. As you progress, new characters are introduced with new abilities and they must be used in various combinations to reach all the stars. You will definitely want to check out the trailer for this one on the second page of this post, because Paper Titans looks absolutely stunning looking.

Next is a game that many thought would never actually see the light of day as it has taken 18 months since its successful Kickstarter campaign to finally get a release date. Star Command is a Trekkie’s dream game; a starship sim, which puts you square on the bridge of your very own spacecraft. Manage your crew, fight off enemy attackers and enjoy some sweet looking retro graphics and star trek campiness in what is likely to be one of the chart topping titles of the night.

Last, but by no means least is Sorcery!. Based on the first book in Steve Jackson’s classic four-part adventure gamebook series, the talented team at inkle have created a whole new style of gamebook with a very intuitive and eye-catching presentation. This “create your own adventure” game writes and rewrites the story on the fly based on both the immediate decisions you make and the type of player your character has become through previous experiences and decisions. I had a chance to meet with the developers at PAX East earlier this year and this game is absolutely brilliant. There is a specially designed combat and spell system unlike the dice-based one used in the original physical book as well as an enormous amount of additional supplemental content written by the folks at inkle to add more branching paths to the game. You can expect a full review very soon but…spoiler alert…BUY IT!

Starting things off is Gameloft’s free-to-play officially licensed Iron Man 3 iOS tie-in to the upcoming feature film. In this 3D endless runner/flyer players take on the role of billionaire Tony Stark (and of course Iron Man) completing fast-paced flying missions in locations scattered around the world as well as one-on-on battles against various villains from the Iron Man comic book series including Crimson Dynamo, Ezekiel Stane, Living Laser, and M.O.D.O.K.. While perhaps not the most original concept, my inner child is a little giddy at the thought of putting on the Iron Man suit and taking flight.

Another freebie coming our way tonight is a new game in adult swim’s Robot Unicorn Attack franchise. Another endless runner, the sequel sticks closely to the winning formula that made the original such a big hit, but adds competitive unique daily levels and a new unicorn customization component which are sure to be crowd-pleasers. I haven’t played any of the games in this franchise before, so I’m looking forward to rectifying that tonight.

Speaking of sequels, Ravenous Games is back with the second installment of their retro-platforming Random Heroes franchise. This second outing arrives with new mechanics, guns and “crazy characters”. With over 90 levels, 22 weapons and 18 unique characters this looks like a fun followup to the original.

I’m having trouble deciphering exactly how the gameplay works in Chillingo’s latest publishing effort, Madmonster. From what I gather from the trailer (which can be seen on the second page of this post), it looks like players take on the role of one of several cute, but ferocious monsters and just wreak all kinds of havoc, moving both skyward and traversing the ground, while upgrading weapons and basically causing mass destruction. Works for me.

Cosmic Quest is an aliens vs. space marines real-time strategy game from newcomers BOSSDOG GAMES. Designed specifically for iOS with simple touch controls, it looks like it falls into a similar vein as Mushroom Wars, offering players 48 levels of gameplay and the ability to face-off against 6 big bosses.

Rounding out the dollar or less apps is Teyon who brings their colorful Nintendo DS game Bird Mania to iOS platforms. Instead of the traditional one-finger approach used by the majority of iOS endless runners, Bird Mania

Now for the big ticket items…

The final four new releases I wanted to mention tonight all come in at the $4.99 price point.

Everybody loves LEGOs and Warner Bros.LEGO Batman: DC Super Heroes. Batman and Robin team up with other DC super heroes including Superman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern and more to try to stop the super villains Lex Luthor and The Joker from destroying Gotham City. Warner Bros. has done such a great job with the previous Harry Pooter LEGO titles that I suspect this will be another great game.

Tonight we also get the second part of Bulkypix’s iOS port of Runaway : Twist of Fate. It is a puzzle / adventure game series from the talented folks at Pendulo Studios. I have no doubt that this will have the same high production values that we’ve seen from previous Pendulo / Bulkypix collaborations and this one will certainly appeal to point and click adventure fans.

Next up is The House of the Dead: Overkill™­- The Lost Reels. Featuring the original cast from Sega’s console on-rails first-person shooter gun game, this new mobile title offers both survival and story modes for players (to use either the accelerometer or virtual d-pad) to “mow down waves of infected, blood-thirsty mutants”. I have never played the console version of this game, but the trailer makes this looks like some good b-movie style fun, despite my general dislike of FPS games on iOS.

Last but not least is the much-anticipated Talisman Prologue HD. Designed for both veterans and newcomers (I fall squarely into later category) this is a single-player only prologue to the “seminal fantasy adventure board game” Talisman.

The game features 10 characters from the classic board game and a total of 50 quests to play through. “The story unfolds as the player rolls dice to move around the outer, middle, and inner regions of the board. Each space will require the player to draw a card or resolve a special effect, leading your hero to encounter monsters, discover friendly followers, and gather treasure.” As I mentioned this is only a single-player affair as a separate multiplayer Talisman game is scheduled for release later this Summer, so keep that in mind. That being said, I will probably be picking this one up to learn how to play the game.

Starting things off is Rocket Patrol, a free-to-play retro sci-fi themed, turn-based racing card game from the developers of Full Deck Solitaire. Race against your friends through asteroid fields, or put out engine fires and jump-start engine reactors as you race to see who can cross the finish line first. From the screenshots, it looks very Mille Bornes-ish, but I’ll know more when I play it tonight.

Next, Chillingo teams with Touch Racing Nitro developer BRAVO Game Studios to bring us a new dual-stick, free-to-play zombie-shooting, area-style racing/destruction game. This looks like it could be a fun (and bloody) little time waster as you attempt to steer and shoot to survive waves of zombies and unlock new vehicles and upgrade them with new weapons.

The last free-to-play title that I wanted to mention is a humorous looking Fairytale-themed turn-based battle/defense game called Fading Fairytales, which has players trying to restore peace to the fairytale folk as they do battle with a mysterious dark force.

Fruit Ninja and Jetpack Joyride creators Halfbrick are finally back with their much-anticipated all-new game called Fish Out Of Water!. In this go-the-furthest style game, players try to throw their fish of choice out of the water trying to get it to fly through the air and skip across the water, travelling as far as possible. Weather conditions which change hourly,a s well as other obstacles will get in your way as you attempt to be king of the daily leaderboards and compete against your friends. At just 99¢ this looks like another charming winner for the Aussies.

The team at Game Stew are back with Gargoyle Ruins, the prequel to their popular retro RPG title Tower of Fortune. Gargoyle Ruins takes less of a gameboy approach to its graphics, but keeps the retro 8-bit styling for this Game & Watch-style inspired title.

Crescent Moon Games re-teams with Zen Training developer Drakkar Dev to bring this fun looking two button primate punch-out to your iOS device. Players can go head-to-head against one another on the same device or work their way through the campaign, decking their simian slugger out in crazy costumes and training their monkey between bouts to improve strength, speed and endurance.

Everybody’s favorite pizza-loving ninja turtles are back in the Nickelodeon-published game Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Rooftop Run, which as the title suggests, is an endless runner. I know what you are thinking…not another endless runner! However, it does feature a ‘Turtle Time’ slow-motion combat mechanism which may be kind of fun.

Another iOS favorite, Om Nom, returns tonight in an all-new Cut the Rope adventure, in Cut the Rope: Time Travel. Players must now help feed two adorable monsters in each level. There are new exotic locations including the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, a Pirate Ship, Ancient Egypt, Ancient Greece, and the Stone Age as well as new gadgets. Cut the Rope fans will definitely be picking this one up tonight!

Finally Bulkypix brings their WiiWare title Ark of Sinners Advance to iOS. Pretty much panned on its earlier Nintendo release, maybe iOS gamers will be a little more forgiving to this action platformer, which from the screenshots and trailer looks pretty sweet to me!
